How Much Does It Actually Cost to Play Padel in the UK? Series 1: A Player's Guide to London

Padel is often described as one of the most accessible sports in the world. And in many ways, it is. But there's another kind of accessibility that matters too — cost.

It is social, fast to learn, easier to pick up than tennis and much less intimidating than many traditional racket sports. You can step onto a court for the first time, hit a few balls, laugh with friends, and very quickly understand why everyone is suddenly talking about it.

But there is another kind of accessibility that matters too. Cost.

Because while padel may be easy to love, it is not always cheap to enter. In London especially, the cost of hiring a court can vary hugely depending on where you play, when you play, and whether you are booking through a club, a gym, a park court, a private venue or a premium indoor padel space.

There is also the booking maze. Some clubs use Playtomic. Some use MATCHi. Some use Padel Mates. Some appear on Playskan. Others use their own website, member app or direct booking system.

For regular players, this becomes normal. For beginners, it can feel like another little gate to get through before you have even picked up a racket.

So we pulled together a London padel price cheat sheet, looking at publicly listed court prices, postcodes and booking systems across clubs and venues in and around the capital.

This is not about criticising clubs. London is expensive, court space is limited, and many venues are investing heavily in creating high-quality places to play. But if padel wants to keep growing as an inclusive, welcoming sport, then it helps to be honest about the real cost of getting started.

The court price is only the beginning

Most padel is played as doubles, which means the court cost is usually split between four players.

That helps.

A £40 court becomes £10 each.
A £60 court becomes £15 each.
A £100 court becomes £25 each.

But the court is rarely the only cost, especially for someone new to the game. A first-time player may also need to think about:

  • racket hire
  • balls
  • travel
  • parking
  • coaching or a beginner session
  • coffee afterwards
  • proper shoes
  • eventually buying their own racket and bag

Individually, those extras may not seem huge. Together, they can make the first few games feel much more expensive than expected.

What London padel courts cost

Based on publicly listed prices in our cheat sheet, London court hire ranges from around £20 per hour at the lower end to around £100 per hour at the premium end.

When split between four players, that means a London padel game can cost anything from around £5 each to £25 each, before extras.

Court price per hour Cost per person if split by 4
£20 £5
£30 £7.50
£40 £10
£50 £12.50
£60 £15
£70 £17.50
£80 £20
£90 £22.50
£100 £25

That shared cost is one of padel's strengths. It is social by design, and that makes it more affordable than it might first appear. But it still means that in London, a single game can sit anywhere from "about the price of a coffee and pastry" to "a boutique fitness class before you have even hired a racket".

What the prices show

The London picture is not one simple story.

There are more accessible options. Some courts sit around £20–£30 per hour, which can bring the cost down to £5–£7.50 per person if four people split the booking.

There is also a large middle tier, with many courts sitting around £40–£60 per hour, or roughly £10–£15 each.

Then there is the premium end of the market, where courts can reach £70–£100 per hour. Split by four, that becomes £17.50–£25 each, before anything else is added.

For regular players, that might be manageable. For someone curious, nervous, new to the sport, or trying to play with their children, it may feel like a bigger decision.

The hidden extras

The first booking is only part of the true cost.

A complete beginner may not yet own a racket. Racket hire can often sit around a few pounds per session, but it varies by venue and is not always clearly listed.

Then there are balls. A tube of padel balls is usually not a huge cost if shared, but it is still another thing to buy, bring or think about.

And if someone decides they want to keep playing, the next stage can become more expensive again. A beginner or mid-range racket can easily move towards £100+. Padel shoes can sit anywhere from around £45 to £120+. A bag, balls and other kit add more. None of this has to be bought immediately, but it is part of the reality of moving from "trying padel" to "becoming a padel player".

This is where the accessibility conversation becomes more complicated.

Padel is accessible in how it feels. It is social, mixed, fast to learn and often beautifully welcoming. But financially, the route in can still have barriers.

The booking app maze

One of the most surprising things about padel in London is not just the range of prices. It is the number of different booking systems.

Depending on where you want to play, you may need:

  • Playtomic
  • MATCHi
  • Padel Mates
  • Playskan
  • a venue's own website
  • a gym membership app
  • a member-only club system
  • a Royal Parks or ClubSpark-style booking system

For experienced players, this becomes part of the routine. For beginners, it can be confusing.

You may hear about a club, search for it, realise it is on a specific app, download the app, create an account, look for a slot, work out what level you should join, then try to find three other people to play with.

That is a lot of friction for a sport that is meant to be easy to start.

And it matters because access is not only about price. It is also about clarity. The easier it is to understand where to go, how much it costs, which app to use and what you need to bring, the more likely new players are to actually step onto court.

How to make padel more affordable

There are ways to reduce the cost.

  • Book off-peak where possible.
  • Split the court properly between four players.
  • Join beginner socials rather than always booking private courts.
  • Look for community venues and park courts.
  • Borrow a racket before buying one.
  • Share balls.
  • Try taster sessions before investing in coaching or kit.
  • Join club WhatsApp groups so you can fill spaces in games.
  • Look for women's sessions, beginner mornings and intro offers.

A lot of the time, the most affordable way into padel is not through a perfect private booking. It is through a group, a social, a taster session, or a friend who already plays.

That matters. Because padel's greatest strength is not just the court. It is the community around it.

The Padelhüd view

At Padelhüd, we love padel because of how it makes people feel.

It gives people a reason to move, meet, laugh, learn and belong. It can be competitive, but it can also be soft, social and welcoming. It can be serious sport, but it can also be the thing that gets someone back into movement after years away.

That is why access matters.

If padel's next chapter is only about building more courts, it misses the point. The real opportunity is to make the route in feel clearer, warmer and less intimidating.

  • Clearer pricing.
  • More visible beginner sessions.
  • More off-peak options.
  • More women's socials.
  • More junior access.
  • More transparent racket hire.
  • More guidance for people who have no idea where to start.

Because padel is easy to love once you are on court. The real question is how easy we make it for people to get there.
